Blackberry Smash

Blackberry Smash is a fruity, citrus and herbal cocktail made with Whiskey, with moderate flavor complexity.

Ingredients

  • 6 to 8 mint leaves
  • 4 blackberries
  • 1/2 lemon, in wedges
  • 20 ml simple syrup
  • 60 ml bourbon whiskey
  • Ice
  • Mint sprig (garnish)
  • 1 blackberry (garnish)

Method

  1. Place the mint leaves in the bottom of the glass.
  2. Add the blackberries and lemon wedges skin-side down, to extract the oils with less bitterness.
  3. Muddle by pressing straight down, without twisting, so you don't tear the mint or release chlorophyll.
  4. Add the simple syrup and bourbon.
  5. Fill the glass with ice — the more ice, the better the chill.
  6. Fit the shaker tin over the glass and shake.
  7. Strain into a glass over fresh ice, pressing to push through the blackberry juice.
  8. Slap the mint sprig to release its aroma, add it to the glass, and finish with a blackberry.

What is the bartender tip for a Blackberry Smash?

The mint stays at the bottom so it only gets lightly pressed while you muddle the blackberries and lemon: twisting the leaves releases chlorophyll and makes the drink bitter. Wedges skin-side down give up essential oil without much pith. A smash puts the bourbon up front — the citrus and blackberry back it up, they don't cover it. Ice to the rim dilutes less than you'd think: too little ice melts faster.
